What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic treatment is simply the treatment of manipulating the joints, usually in the spine, that have become misaligned. Chiropractic focuses on the musculoskeletal system, which provides form, support, stability, and movement to the entire body. It is comprised of bones, muscles, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, joints, and other connective tissue. Muscles are pulling on the joints with everyday activities and the joints move around, giving us mobility in our bodies. Usually this isn’t a problem and does not cause any discomfort or pain. Accidents, injuries, work, stress, and everyday wear on our bodies can cause the muscles and joints to not move properly. When joints are jammed and not moving correctly, we feel pressure, pain, spasms and inflammation. Sometimes the pressure and inflammation can ‘pinch’ or compress the nerves, causing radiating pain.
A chiropractor can effectively use their hands to feel these jammed joints and then use manipulation techniques to unlock the joints which takes pressure off the nerve. Chiropractic’s main goal is to restore normal mobility and range of motion. Spinal manipulation can restore structure of the spine, reduce pressure off the nerves and improve overall health. Manipulation of the other joints is possible as well, such as the knees, elbows, wrists, and ankles.
Medication that is prescribed by a medical doctor will not fix any of these problems, but instead will only reduce the symptoms. These types of issues are not noted on X-rays because nothing is broken or fractured. Chiropractic treatment builds on itself and patients should start seeing improvement within 1-4 visits.
